Minimalism : Less is More

Do you know what minimalism is?

This is how I define minimalism

It’s a life style that I’m still learning little by little everyday. The shortest explanation I could provide is that minimalism is owning possessions with a purpose. Every item you own has a purpose and a reason for existing in your life. If you live your life this way, then the end result is that you own less things since everything has a purpose.

This is the polar opposite of consumerism which is all about buying more and more things just for the sake of increasing the number of things you own.

While my definition of minimalism is not perfect, it’s what I use as my guideline while implementing this lifestyle into my day-to-day life.

My Minimalist Adventure

I am not a minimalist, nor do I think I’ll ever live the ideal minimalist lifestyle that is showcased on YouTube, Instagram, and other social media platforms. If you go on google and type out minimalist, you’ll see a ton of examples of people living the minimalistic lifestyle. Which can be intimidating.

This is why I always state that I’m either trying to become more minimalist or am implementing more minimalist decisions in my life whenever chatting with people. After all the most important part of this lifestyle (and any lifestyle) is being aware of its existence and incorporating what works best into your life. What may work for some Instagram model, may not work for you.

What am I doing with Minimalism?

Minimalism Action #1: I’m Learning about Minimalism via YouTube

I’m subscribed to a few YouTube channels which I’ll list below for your reference:

I’m also starting to create a playlist on YouTube of videos that inspire me and help guide me through my minimalist journey. Currently there are only a few videos but I do hope to upload more with time.

Minimalism Action #2: I’ve joined the Conquer Today community

While I was on reddit I stumbled across of Conquer Today and immediately connected with almost everything from their site. Jordan from Conquer Today is a an amazing individual and is a huge believer in personal development. Currently there are two articles on there about Minimalism that may be of use to you guys:

On the Conquer Today website they provide several downloads so if you have a free afternoon, or 30 minutes to spend, I’d recommend checking it out.

Minimalism Action #3: I’m keeping inventory of my life

After gathering all my research and going with my personal definition of minimalism, I’ve decided to keep an inventory of everything in my life. I cannot cite only one source for this conclusion, but several influences that helped me get to this conclusion have been reddit and Landmark, specifically the Advanced Course.

There are several methods that I’ve been using to keep inventory and I plan to write more about my adventure when it comes to being aware of all aspects of my life. This means not just my physical items that surround me on a daily basis, but this also means the people I know, the places I’ve been, and the things I want to achieve.

Minimalism isn’t always about not having much, it’s about knowing what you have and having a purpose of having it in your life… Or at least that’s what it means to me.

What are your thoughts on Minimalism?

Is your definition of minimalism different than my own? Do you have resources or references that you use to live a more minimalistic life? Is there something about minimalism you’d like me to either discover or talk about?

I’d love to hear from you.
